ABSTRACT

Caries is demineralization process of dental hard tissues as a result of
bacterial infection, one of which is S. mutans. Matoa is one of plant as
traditional medicine been provent contain the antibacterial components like
flavonoid. This research aimed to determine the antibacterial effects of leaves
matoa extracts to S. mutans.

This research was an true eksperimental design. Preparation of leaves
matoa extracts concentration of 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 0% using ethanol
solvent by soxhlet method. S.mutans bred in BHI liquid medium for 24 hour
incubation at the temperature of 37°C and then diluted with saline, and suicide
inhibition test using pitting diffusion and dilution methods of counting the
number of bacterial colonies live with 5 sample.

Based on Kruskall-Wallis test, the inhibition zone and counting the number
of bacterial colonies had significant differences between group consentration
(p<0.05), while Mann-Whitney test showed that each group had a significantly
mean of different significantly (p<0.05).

The antibacterial effect of leaves matoa extract has effective against
Streptococcus mutans growth. Where the largest mean inhibition zone diameter
is leaves matoa extract 100% and the number of colonies alive 0 CFU/ml in
leaves matoa extracts 75% and 100%.
